INGREDIENTS

Here’s what you need to make this recipe!

  • 2 Granny smith apples
  • Lemon juice
  • Brown sugar
  • White sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Butter
  • Flour

How many of these ingredients do you have right now? Usually I have everything except the apples so this could also be an inexpensive recipe with minimal extra items to buy.

HOW TO MAKE CARAMELIZED APPLES

Step 1. Peel and dice the Granny smith apples into small bite-sized pieces.
Step 2. Add the butter to the pot and melt over medium-low heat.
Step 3. Pour in the apples, sugars, lemon juice, spices, and flour. Stir to blend.
Step 4. Cook over low heat for 8-10 minutes. In the last 90 seconds of cooking, increase the heat to medium to allow the sugars to get thick and more caramelized.

Pour into a heat safe bowl and allow to cool slightly before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days for best freshness.

Now that you have your apples caramelized you’re going to need some ideas on how to use them! Here are some ways to use these tasty apples!

  • As a topping on pancakes, waffles, or French toast.
  • In puff pastry Danishes, which is how I first made these in my mini apple Danishes!
  • As an epic ice cream sundae topping, like a deconstructed apple pie!
  • As a topping on baked or no bake cheesecakes.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 6-8 servings
  • Category: Dessert
  • Method: Saute
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

2 Granny smith apples, diced
1 tablespoon fresh squeezed lemon juice
1 tablespoon butter
2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
1/2 tablespoon all purpose flour
2 teaspoons white sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon salt

Instructions

1. In a medium pot melt the butter over medium-low heat.

2. Once the butter is melted, add the apples, lemon juice, both sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir so everything is combined. Reduce heat to low.

3. Cook the apples on low heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. For the last 90 seconds of cooking increase the heat to medium and continue to stir. This will allow the sugars to get slightly darker and a bit thicker.

4. Turn off the heat and add to a heat safe bowl.

Allow to cool a bit then add to ice cream, waffles, pancakes, cheesecakes, and more!

Notes

You can store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or a pot.
