There’s nothing quite like a hot dog to ring in those Summer vibes. But how about we upgrade that Summer hot dog to something a little more gourmet? Blue Cheese Hot Dogs let you enjoy all the nostalgic flavors of a hot dog, while still sitting at the grownups table.

Recipe at a Glance

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Notes: You can eat these plain, or add your favorite finishing sauce. I combined some BBQ sauce and mayo for a BBQ Mayo drizzle.

What hot dogs to buy

The only hot dog I’ll ever buy is all beef. I grew up eating Hebrew National dogs and for me their flavor is the best. Plus, they’re a great choice for feeding a crowd and any of the guests don’t eat pork. They make these bun length hot dogs which will give you the perfect cookout hotdog look!

How to cook the hot dogs

If you’re like me and don’t have a grill, I recommend pan frying them. Just add them to the pan over medium heat and cook them for about 6-7 minutes. I like to make sure they get nice and browned so you get the ‘fresh off the grill’ look, without the grill!

If you have a grill, by all means fire it up! The cooking time will similar, about 7-8 minutes on the grill until you get an internal temperature of 165 degrees.

For this recipe I don’t recommend microwaving or boiling. You really want that browned cooked like that only pan frying or grilling will get you!

Once you’ve got the dogs cook the rest is just a simple assembly recipe. When they are cool enough to touch, you’ll cut a slit down the center, then stuff the center with as much blue cheese as you want!

Add some cooked crumbled bacon (or leave it off for people who don’t eat pork) then broil them in the buns until the cheese is melty and the buns are browned and toasted.

Top with some diced chives or some color and extra flavor and you’re ready to eat!

These are so flavorful they really don’t need any additional sauce, but if you wanted to sauce these up you could add a BBQ mayo, spicy mayo, or ketchup.

Ingredients

6 beef hot dogs
6 hot dog buns
Blue cheese
Crumbled bacon, cooked
Finely diced chives
Mayo

Instructions

1. Cook the hot dogs in a frying pan for 6-7 minutes until browned. Internal temperature should reach 165 degrees. Remove from the pan and allow to cool slightly.

2. Place the hot dog buns on a baking sheet and spread mayo on each side of the bun.

3. Carefully cut a slit down the center of the hot dogs. Stuff with as much blue cheese as you’d like, then add a hot dog to each bun. Top with crumbled bacon.

4. Place under the broiler for 1-2 minutes (watching closely!!) until the blue cheese has melted and the buns are toasted. Top with diced chives, any sauce you’d like, and enjoy! For my hot dogs I topped with BBQ mayo.
