Chicken drumsticks are a great way to get a chicken dinner on the table at an affordable price! Mix up a simple dry rub, use your favorite bottled BBQ sauce, then bake for 40 minutes to make these oven baked BBQ drumsticks. This easy and inexpensive dinner will be a family favorite for weeknights.

INGREDIENTS

Check your fridge and pantry then get your shopping list ready! Usually the only thing I need to buy is the chicken, and at less than $4 a pack that makes for one cheap dinner!

  • Chicken drumsticks. This recipe is for cooking 5 pieces with the skin removed. You can easily double this recipe if you’re making this for a party or cookout!
  • Seasonings: Chicken bouillon, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and brown sugar.
  • BBQ Sauce: Keep this simple and use whatever your favorite bottle is! I’ve been loving Rib Rack BBQ Sauce or Sticky Finger’s.

HOW TO BAKE CHICKEN DRUMSTICKS

This really is a simple dinner that you can easily make on a weeknight! Just three steps: Prep, season, bake.

Prep the chicken. Remove the skin. The easiest way to do this is use a paper towel to grab hold of the skin then give it an aggressive pull. Any areas that are a little stubborn use a knife of kitchen sheers. After the skin is removed, I make two slices on each piece to score the drumsticks. I like to do this to allow the seasoning and sauce to really add flavor in the chicken too!

Season. Add the drumsticks to a bowl then season with the dry rub and the BBQ sauce.

Bake. Bake in a 425 degree oven for 40 minutes. Internal temperature needs to be 165 degrees. Get yourself a digital meat thermometer so there’s no guess work!

WHAT TO SERVE WITH CHICKEN DRUMSTICKS

Since most of this recipe is the 40 minutes baking time, you can use that time to prep any sides. Here are some ideas…

  • Mashed potatoes. Keep this super simple and used instant mashed potatoes. I always keep a few pouches on hand.
  • Pasta salad. I’ve got a round up here of over 20 pasta salads! Once of those would be delicious with BBQ chicken.
  • Veggies: Zucchini, creamed spinach, asparagus.
  • Baked potato.
  • Potato salad.
  • Deviled eggs.
  • Garden salad or Caesar salad.
  • Corn on the cob.

  • Method: Bake
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

5 chicken drumsticks, skin removed
2/3 cup BBQ sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon chicken bouillon powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Remove the skin from the drumsticks and cut 2 slits in each piece of chicken. (I like to do this to be able to get the dry rub and sauce in the drumstick).

2. Combine the brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, chicken bouillon, salt, and pepper.

3. Add the drumsticks to a bowl then coat with the dry rub, making sure each piece is generously coated.

4. Pour the BBQ sauce over top and coat each piece of chicken, making sure sauce and seasoning are in the slits you cut from step 1.

5. Add the drumsticks to the parchment paper-lined baking sheet, baste with any of the sauce left in the bowl, then bake for 40 minutes. Internal chicken temperature needs to reach 165 degrees. (Note: the sugars from the sauce will char on the parchment paper).
