Even if you don’t have a grill you can still eat tender flavorful chicken burgers all year long! Cook chicken burgers in a pan and you’ll have an easy and filling dinner on the table in less than 15 minutes.
HOW TO KEEP GROUND CHICKEN TENDER
Ground chicken is super lean so you don’t have the help from fat like in ground beef to keep the burgers moist. So the way to avoid dry and crumbly chicken burger is by adding in moisture to the mix.
You can add this moisture in many different ways! Some recipes I just add water, in Asian inspired burgers you can add teriyaki sauce, chicken broth, ranch dressing, mayo, lime juice, or whatever suits your flavor!
Just by adding a little but of your moisture ingredient to the ground chicken you’ll cook up a burger that is SO tender.
HOW MUCH TO SEASON GROUND CHICKEN
Ground chicken needs A LOT of seasoning to make sure it’s not bland. Trust me on this, what you think is a good amount of seasoning, you’ll probably want to double it then that’s enough for ground chicken.
Like I mentioned above this is a lean type of meat, it doesn’t have that extra help from fat like ground beef does in a typical beef burger. So we need to help it along to make sure we don’t end up with a burger lacking in flavor and a huge dinner disappointment.
Depending on the type of burger recipe here are some spices and seasonings you can use:
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Ginger
- Smoked paprika
- Cumin
- Chili powder
- Taco seasoning
- Italian seasoning
- Chicken bouillon powder
COOKING THE CHICKEN BURGERS IN A PAN
I typically use a non-stick pan, but you can also use cast iron if you prefer. First, to your pan you’ll add a few teaspoons of olive oil (or whatever cooking oil you use most) and heat that over medium heat.
Once the oil is hot, add your seasoned chicken patties. Make sure to press down slightly in the center of each patty so they don’t puff up like a big meatball as they cook.
Cook the patties for 6 minutes, then flip them and press down with your spatula and cook for another 5 minutes. At this point the burgers should be fully cooked with an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
If the temperature has not yet reached 165 then add a little water to the pan to create some steam and cover the pan with foil. Cook in additional 30 second increments until done.
I highly recommend getting yourself a digital meat thermometer! This is the thermometer I use, and it really helps prevent you from over or under cooking your meat!
LEFTOVER STORAGE AND REHEATING
Usually my burger recipes are for 4 burgers so depending on how many you eat there may be some leftovers. Keep any leftover burgers in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days for best freshness. You can also freeze them for up to 4 months.
To reheat, I prefer to cut them in half to help the center get hot quickly without drying out the cooked burgers. You can reheat them in a pan, microwave, or oven. Typically I use the microwave for a quick and simple leftover lunch. If you use a pan you can add a little water then cover with foil so the steam helps reheat the burger all the way around.
