Homemade sazon is an easy seasoning mixture you can make in less than 5 minutes with just 7 spices! Whip this up and store it in an air tight container. Never eat bland chicken again when you’ve got a jar of sazon at home!

You might be familiar with the Goya spice packets of sazon. I’m going to tell you why homemade sazon is better, and once you make your own you’ll never want to buy the packets again! By making your own sazon, you can control the amount of salt so never have food that’s loaded with too much sodium.

Spices for Sazon

So here’s what you need to make this spice blend!

  • Garlic powder
  • Oregano
  • Cumin
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Ground Coriander
  • Ground Annato

You might not be familiar with ground annato. Annato is that gorgeous red spice on the plate above. It’s actually made from the seeds of the achiote tree, which is a tree common in Mexican and Brazil The seeds are bright red, which create the bright red powder when they’re ground up. I had no problem finding it in my grocery store! I found it in the International food aisle where they keep the spices. Since I only use it to make sazon, the bottle lasts me a long time.

If you can’t find it in your store, this is the one I used this recipe!

What to season with the homemade sazon

So now you have your bowl of spice blend and you’re wondering what to make with it? Here are some ideas:

  • Chicken breasts
  • Chicken thighs
  • Ground chicken for chicken tacos
  • Rice
  • Ground beef for tacos or enchiladas
  • Black beans

It really is a great seasoning that can be used to enhance any dish! If you’re looking for a chicken thighs recipe, you want to check out my Sazon Chicken Thighs
