How to Caramelize Red Onions

Slice the red onions.

Melt the butter and oil in a Dutch oven then add the onions and 1/4 teaspoon salt.

Step 3

Cook for at least 40 minutes, stirring frequently. Optional to add 1/4 teaspoon of sugar in the last 5 minutes of cooking.

Step 4

Remove cooked onions to a plate. Add immediately to your recipe, or chill or freeze to use later.
